Green Budget for NS

In the upcoming provincial budget, the Green Party of Nova Scotia wants to see decisive action to build the green economy of the future. We will be looking for investments in renewable energy and conservation, job creation in green industries, and a focus on building long term economic stability.

The rapid changes taking place across the world are a wake-up call. This is an opportunity for us to retool our economy to supply real needs, solve real problems, and provide real, sustainable jobs.

Your feedback is welcome, please let me know what you want to see in the provincial budget by email or in the comments below.

Update:  also see Green Economy, Green Budget on the Green Party website.

Here’s what I would like to see added to the Budget:

Arsenic levels found within wells in this province are SIX TIMES HIGHER than Health Canada allows PER LITRE. Arsenic is KNOWN to be carcinogenic and may be one of the causes of Nova Scotia leading the cases of cancer in all of Canada.

    This is unacceptable.

Residents of Nova Scotia are not well-informed of high arsenic in their well-water. They are left to “discover” this on their own. As well, they are required to pay for their own water testing. WHEN they find high levels of arsenic, homeowners are solely responsible for the high cost of water treatment for their wells simply to drink, cook, and brush their teeth.

Is the Nova Scotia government neglecting their people and allowing 40% of homeowners (approximate number of those who own wells) within this province to fight for BASIC essentials in an already struggling economy? Nova Scotian’s are found neglected in a fight for their BASIC needs to be met without the resources, information, and support needed from their government.

    Thank you for your consideration,

I would like to see a piece of legislation which would bring about a simple yet profound change in the way we see our Province and also reduce energy consumption.

Everywhere we go in Rural and Metropolitan Nova Scotia we are bombarded with bright signs, excessive street lighting, vanity lighting of bridges and both public and private buildings, excessive & poorly designed lighting of sports fields and ill conceived use of security lighting.

By legislating a “Dark Skies” policy we would save countless tons of energy emissions as well as give us back the “Natural” view and perspective of our beautiful Province. This would allow people to see and experience more of the “Real” world and hopefully help them focus more on things which will enrich that experience and promote better husbandry of our planet.

An end to light pollution would be a simple and great start.

I would also like to see legislation which would prevent the denuding of landscape which will be used for residential and commercial development. The clear cutting and bulldozing of everything is not necessary or healthy.

One other thought would be to have a legislated requirement placed on developers of new residential communities to make those communities self contained in as much as residents could get essentials with out the need for an automobile. ie shops and recreation within walking commute.
