About Ryan

What inspires me more than anything is to be part of the movement towards a more prosperous, peaceful and green world.

As I consider the challenges facing us in Nova Scotia, and the challenges facing people across the globe, I feel like we are embarking on one of the most exciting journeys that human beings have ever had the good fortune to face. And at the same time I am deeply disturbed about the state of our world, and very aware of the incredible struggles ahead.

I grew up in the mountains of British Columbia, and spent many summers working in the forests of the Kootenay Valley. Leading crews of wild-land firefighters gave me both a training in leadership under challenging conditions, as well as a real sense of the complexity, vastness, vulnerability, and resilience of the natural world.

Since moving to Nova Scotia with my wonderful wife Shannon in 2005 we have been proud to become part of this community. The transition has not always been easy, but there is a feeling of solidness and cheerfulness here that is so encouraging as we put down our roots in Halifax.

Shannon is pregnant, and I am so excited and thrilled to become a father in August, 2008. Bringing a child into the world adds a whole new sense of urgency and personal importance to the work of building the future that I want my son or daughter to grow up and inherit.

Here in Nova Scotia, my work organizing and coordinating international leadership training programs and local community development workshops has exposed me to innovative approaches for addressing challenging social problems with leadership, vision and courage.

We have at our disposal all the tools we need to solve the climate crisis, the energy crisis, the health care crisis, and the economic challenges we face. This will not be easy or painless. But there is no doubt that we have the industriousness and the foresight to build our province into a sustainable, healthy, bright green place to live, work and play. Once we come together and make a commitment to this path, incredible new options will open for us and everything will become possible.

I look forward to taking this journey with you, and I will continue to work tirelessly to create a better future for us all.

Sincerely yours,

Ryan Watson
